In light of the COVID-19 social distancing restrictions and its impact on the upcoming primary election in Maryland, the Maryland State Bar Association’s (“MSBA”) Public Awareness Committee is issuing this press release to advise Marylanders that the date for the 2020 Primary Election has been changed and to remind Marylanders of their ability to vote by absentee ballot. The primary elections have been moved back to June 2, 2020, but the absentee voting deadline has not changed. To participate in absentee voting, which any registered Maryland voter may do for any reason, you must first request an absentee ballot from your local election office. For the 2020 primary elections, if you want to receive your ballot by mail or fax, your request for an absentee ballot must be received (not just mailed) by Tuesday, May 26, 2020. If you want to download your ballot from the State Board of Election’s website, your request must be received (not just mailed) by Friday, May 29, 2020.

Under the current guidance on social distancing and the Maryland ban on gatherings of 10 or more people, you may want to consider voting by absentee ballot, which lets you vote without going to a polling place and compromising your health. Exercise your right to vote! Your vote is important, however, your health is important too!
