Have you heard of Ben Garmoe? If not, you will soon – because he is everywhere!
The staff and Board of MYLaw (Maryland Youth and the Law) wish to congratulate our very own Ben Garmoe on his recent promotion to full-time lecturer at University of Maryland Carey Law! As such, he will serve as the Managing Director of its award-winning National Trial Team. Starting in August, Ben will be teaching the Trial Team class, coaching the competition teams, and working with the wonderful students and coaches in the Trial Team community.
Ben’s legal career began as a high school student at Bowie High School in the MYLaw Mock Trial Competition. Ben went on to UMBC where he helped to re-start the Mock Trial team and served as President in 2012-13. After graduating from UMBC in 2013 with a major in Political Science, he took over as Head Coach of UMBC Mock Trial in 2015. This past April, UMBC won the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) National Championship, defeating Yale University in the final round.
Five years ago, Ben graduated from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law where he served as captain of the Maryland Law National Trial Team from 2015-2016. He says, “it’s hard to believe I get to work full-time at my alma mater, teaching and coaching in the same rooms where I learned so much of what I know.”
For the past several years, he has worked with Vernon & Fanshaw /GEICO as staff counsel, while fulfilling his roles with the National Trial Team at Maryland Carey Law and UMBC. In 2019, Ben joined MYLAW as a member of the Board of Directors, as well as the MYLAW Mock Trial Committee, where he developed the 2020-21 case, State v. Gardner, for the Maryland High School Mock Trial competition.
How fitting is it that Maryland’s 2021 state champion – Park School – went on to win the National High School Mock Trial Competition, and then celebrated with UMBC’s champion team? There’s a common denominator here!
Ben credits MYLAW Mock Trial for helping him discover his passion for legal argument, litigation and teaching, which ultimately inspired him to become a lawyer and continue coaching Mock Trial to this day. We are so grateful that he is in our ranks, and wish him so much success at Carey Law!
