The Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) congratulates Judge Matthew J. Fader on his appointment to serve as Chief Judge in the Court of Appeals.

Natalie McSherry, President of the MSBA, released the following statement:

“As the home of the entire legal profession in Maryland for the last 125 years, the Maryland State Bar Association has enjoyed the privilege of working with exceptional individuals who have held the esteemed role of Chief Judge, including Judge Getty, Judge Barbera and Judge Robert Bell, among many.

We congratulate Judge Matthew Fader on his appointment to serve as Chief Judge in Maryland’s highest court, and look forward to his leadership in the position as well as hope to continue the MSBA’s role as a trusted partner to the judiciary.”

Judge Fader was Chief Judge of the Court of Special Appeals, where he served beginning in 2017. In February, Governor Larry Hogan announced that Judge Fader would succeed Judge Joseph M. Getty on the Court, upon Judge Getty’s retirement. On Friday, the governor designated Judge Fader as the new chief judge.

Prior to his appointment to the Court of Special Appeals, Judge Fader held various roles at the Office of the Attorney General, including Chief of Civil Litigation. Before joining the Attorney General’s office, he was a partner at K&L Gates LLP, an international law firm, where he represented clients in commercial litigation in federal and state courts. Judge Fader served as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice from 1999 to 2002.
