On behalf of the Maryland State Bar Association, we offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Honorable J. Frederick Motz. A cherished member since 1968, Judge Motz was a remarkably influential jurist with a steady demeanor and an unrelenting commitment to protecting the rights of our most vulnerable Maryland citizens.

In 2018, Judge Motz received the Vernon Eney Endowment Fund Award; an honor presented by the Maryland Bar Foundation to an individual who demonstrates outstanding leadership to enhance government and the administration of justice. In 2002, he was awarded the Criminal Law and Practice Section – Robert C. Heeney Award; an annual honor bestowed to the one criminal defense attorney who best exemplifies the goals and values of the MSBA and the legal profession.

Judge Motz brought to the bench an inimitable blend of leadership and kindness, and his commitment to civil justice will positively influence future generations of Marylanders for years to come.  He will be greatly missed.
