What might have happened had the notorious gangster Al Capone been tried in court for his alleged role in the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre? Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, and Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) President Judge Keith R. Truffer, among many others, will attempt to answer that question when they star onstage as some of Capone’s most well-known contemporaries in The Trial of Al Capone on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, MD.
“The presentation will take the audience back in time to the days of speakeasies, flappers, and Prohibition-era Chicago,” says Truffer. “The roles of ‘Scarface’ Capone, lawman Eliot Ness, ‘The Enforcer’ Frank Nitti, and other colorful characters will be played by prominent Marylanders, including former Governor O’Malley, Attorney General Frosh, and U.S. Attorney for Maryland Robert Hur.”
Written by nationally renowned Maryland trial lawyer Paul Mark Sandler and produced by the MSBA, The Trial of Al Capone tells the story of how things might have played out in court for the organized crime boss had he been tried. All proceeds will benefit the Maryland Access to Justice Commission in its ongoing mission to drive systemic reforms and innovations to make the civil justice system more accessible, user-friendly, and fair for all Marylanders.
Sandler wrote the play “just for fun” at the request of the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association, which first produced it on April 13, 2016, at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, receiving terrific reviews.
“Judge Truffer thought it would be a great idea for the Maryland State Bar Association to produce the play in Maryland for public enjoyment, and to raise funds for Access to Justice,” explains Sandler, who chairs the General Litigation Group in the Baltimore office of the law firm of Shapiro Sher. “I am delighted to share this with a new audience, and excited about our stellar cast for the May 18 production. I hope those who attend will be excited as well.”
