On July 7, 2021, Carolyn Elefant (moderator), Sarah F. Horowitz, Jessica Markham, Cary Jacobson, Kate McDonough and Angela Holliday Hansen participated in a panel discussion on lawyer moms who started their own firms with the belief that law firm ownership is an ideal solution for the optimal work-life balance. The law can be a demanding profession, requiring long hours and an unpredictable schedule, and as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, legal professionals are increasingly thinking about their career priorities and considering whether to continue down their current career path.

In this segment of MSBA’s 2021 Legal Summit Series, the panelists share their thoughts and insight on a series of topics covering, among other things:

  • Misconceptions about running a law firm as a mother or parent and the benefits and drawbacks of being a parent and law firm owner
  • Advice for starting or growing a law practice and tips for communicating with a supportive but nervous spouse about the importance of law practice ownership
  • Dealing with costs, benefits, and risks of starting a law firm, and things to consider in the hiring and delegation process
