In the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence, there have been multiple developments in generative tools since Open AI launched ChatGPT 3.5 in November 2022. These artificial intelligence (AI) tools have the power to increase efficiency in the workplace by increasing productivity. This article will focus on several generative AI tools currently on the market from three of the largest providers: Open AI, Google and Microsoft.
OpenAI ChatGPT
ChatGPT 3.5
OpenAI continues to offer ChatGPT 3.5, what I call their basic ChatGPT plan, free to the public. The GPT in ChatGPT stands for “generative pre-trained transformer,” which means it’s been trained on a vast amount of human language by way of data from the internet, including books, articles, websites, and social media. After giving it a question or prompt, ChatGPT produces a response. The more details you provide in your prompts, the more precise answers ChatGPT will offer. ChatGPT is not a search engine and does not have the most up-to-date information. This may cause errors or “hallucinations” within its responses, as previously reported by the MSBA in NY Lawyer and Law Firm Sanctioned for Citing Fake Cases Derived From AI and Using ChatGPT for Legal Research. Not so fast! Hence, humans need to review and edit the information it provides.
ChatGPT 4.0 Plus
Open AI is now offering a Plus option, an upgrade from the basic ChatGPT 3.5 for $20 per person/month. The Plus option includes everything in their free option, plus GPT-4, advanced data analysis, plugins, and early access to beta features. Usage in the Plus option is capped at 50 messages every three hours. GPT-4 can accept image and text inputs and produce text outputs. GPT-4 is OpenAI’s most advanced system, is up to date and has more advanced reasoning skills, but it still may be prone to disinformation. ChatGPT 4.0 Enterprise
ChatGPT recently announced that ChatGPT Enterprise is now available, which the OpenAI website hails as “enterprise-grade security and privacy, unlimited high-speed GTP-4 access, longer context windows for processing longer inputs, advanced data analysis capabilities, customizations options, and much more.” The best feature of GPT Enterprise is its powerful AI-powered chatbot that conducts research, creates outlines, and drafts content with pre-existing templates. The pricing for ChatGPT Enterprise depends on the number of employees in your organization. It includes everything in their Plus subscription plus unlimited access to GPT-4, longer inputs with 32k token context, unlimited advanced data analysis, internally shareable chat templates, a dedicated admin console, SSO, domain verification, analytics, and an application programming interface (API). An API is a computer code that allows two unrelated software applications to talk to each other. Open AI promises the Enterprise data collected from its users is not used for training. Bard
Bard is Google’s answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Bard pulls information from the web to provide responses to a prompt, but Google uses its own programmed language learning model. Bard has the ability to produce images in its responses. Google has incorporated Bard into Gmail, Maps and YouTube. Theoretically, Bard will help a user plan a trip to New York, identify different flight and hotel options, provide directions from Maps and suggest informative videos from YouTube. Bard is free and open to the public and is available in over 40 languages. You must be 18 or over. You also need a personal Google Account that you manage on your own or a Google Workspace account.
Duet AI for Google Workspace
Duet AI for Google Workspace (“Duet AI”) is a real-time AI collaborator. It can create text and images for documents and take meeting notes. Based upon user prompts, it can write draft texts in Google Docs, create a resume template, create emails in Gmail, organize data in Sheets, and add illustrations in Slides. In Google Meets, Duet AI is ensuring all meeting participants look and sound professional by adding enhanced AI features. Duet AI also has automatic translated captions for 18 different languages. An additional plus is Duet AI’s note-taking capabilities. Duet AI will take notes in real-time of video conferences and send a summary of the notes to all attendees after the meeting. Google is offering a 14-day free trial. The subscription fee is $30 per person/month for big businesses.
Microsoft
Bing Chat Enterprise
Bing Chat Enterprise (“Bing”), unlike ChatGPT, provides verifiable answers with citations supporting its responses. Bing’s citations are actual footnotes that the user can click on that bring the user to the internet article supporting Bing’s response. Bing can also generate images in its responses. Microsoft licenses GPT tech from OpenAI and incorporates it into Bing, but adds its proprietary algorithm to produce better responses and provides responses that are up to date in real-time. The Microsoft website states that Bing was designed based on their AI Principles of fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability. Bing is currently free for Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Premium subscribers. In the future, Microsoft will offer it as a stand-alone service for $5 per person/month.
Copilot
Microsoft has embedded OpenAI technology to Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The Microsoft website claims Copilot will summarize key discussion points of a conversation held in Teams and provide recaps, create PowerPoint presentations with images, draft emails, analyze long email threads and documents, and create summaries and graphs of data on Excel spreadsheets. When available, Copilot will cost $30 per person/month. The early access program began on May 9, 2023, and is available to only 600 customers worldwide. Currently, users must pay for the program, which is accessible by invitation only. Microsoft’s blog post announced that Microsoft expects to release Copilot to all enterprise customers in the winter of 2023 or early 2024. Microsoft has also partnered with Thomson Reuters to support generative AI contract drafting. Recently, Microsoft announced it will defend users of its Copilot generative AI tools if they are sued for copyright infringement, but only if the user utilizes the content filters and other safety systems

ChatGPT is an AI language model developed by Open AI, pulling data from the internet and using its proprietary language learning model to respond to text-based inputs. Duet AI is a conversational AI platform developed by Google that uses Google Bard, a language model similar to ChatGPT. It helps users organize and write summaries and emails and even provides meeting notes after video conferences. Bing is a search engine developed by Microsoft that provides users with relevant search results based on their queries with citations. Copilot is an AI-powered code completion tool developed by Microsoft that assists users in writing summaries, emails, PowerPoints, and more. These tools can help workers save time, improve quality, solve problems and learn new skills.
