Going back to school can be both exciting and a little scary for your children. Preparing your children for school can help ease their transition and set them up for a successful academic year. Here are some tips to help you and your child have a great year:

  • Have open and positive conversations with your children about the new school year. Listen to any anxieties or worries your children may have about going back to school. Validate their feelings and offer reassurance, support and tools to manage them. Ask them what they are excited about.
  • We are creatures of habit and thrive by having a routine. A routine also helps reduce stress. Sleep is so important, so gradually adjust their sleep schedules a couple of weeks before school starts. Plan meal times and establish a daily routine that includes study time, playtime, and other activities.
  • Shop for school supplies together. Let them pick out their backpack, notebooks, and other essentials. This can make them feel excited about the upcoming school year.
  • If new to a school, if possible, visit the school with your children before the first day. Familiarize them with the school, show them their classrooms, and introduce them to their teachers if possible.
  • Talk to your children about any safety measures the school may have in place, such as illness  protocols or other safety guidelines. Reassure them that their safety is a priority.
  • Encourage your children to take on age-appropriate responsibilities, such as organizing their backpack, preparing their lunch, or picking out their clothes for the next day. This fosters confidence, independence, and responsibility.
  • Discuss their goals and expectations for the upcoming school year. Help them set realistic and achievable goals for both academics and extracurricular activities.
  • Your children look to you to be a role model. Be a positive role model and encourage a positive attitude toward learning and school.
  • Include your children in healthy meal planning. Prepare nutritious meals and snacks together for your children to fuel their minds and bodies during the school day.
  • Consider having a small celebration or tradition to mark the beginning of the new school year, such as a special dinner or a fun outing over the weekend.

Each child is unique, so tailor your approach to their individual needs and personality. By providing support, encouragement, and a positive environment, you can help your children approach the new school year with confidence and enthusiasm.
